Quick answer: In 2027, a Kolkata employee can get about 40 days off by taking just 12 days of leave, spread across five holiday clusters:

  • Republic Day: 1 leave gets 4 days off
  • Dol Jatra plus Good Friday: 3 leaves get 9 days off
  • Bakrid plus Buddha Purnima: 3 leaves get 9 days off
  • Durga Puja: 2 leaves get 9 days off
  • Kali Puja plus Diwali: 3 leaves get 9 days off

If you can spare 6 leaves for Puja alone, you get a 16-day break from Gandhi Jayanti to Lakshmi Puja.

There's also bad news. 2027 is a harsh year for holidays: at least eight of them fall on a Saturday or Sunday. That makes planning your leave more important than in most years.

The 2027 holiday dates this calendar uses

These are the expected West Bengal and central holiday dates for 2027. Festival dates depend on the lunar calendar, and Eid dates depend on the moon sighting, so always cross-check with your office holiday list.

  • January: Swami Vivekananda's birthday on Tuesday, January 12. Netaji Jayanti on Saturday, January 23. Republic Day on Tuesday, January 26.
  • February: Saraswati Puja on Thursday, February 11.
  • March: Eid-ul-Fitr is expected around Tuesday, March 9 or Wednesday, March 10. Doljatra is on Monday, March 22, Holi on Tuesday, March 23 and Good Friday on Friday, March 26.
  • April and May: Ambedkar Jayanti and Pohela Boishakh are both expected on Wednesday, April 14. May Day and Rabindra Jayanti both fall on Saturdays.
  • May and June: Bakrid on Monday, May 17. Buddha Purnima on Thursday, May 20. Muharram on Wednesday, June 16.
  • August: Independence Day falls on Sunday, August 15. Janmashtami is on Wednesday, August 25.
  • Durga Puja: Gandhi Jayanti on Saturday, October 2. Maha Saptami on Wednesday, October 6, Maha Ashtami on Thursday, October 7, Maha Navami on Friday, October 8 and Vijaya Dashami on Saturday, October 9.
  • Lakshmi Puja: Thursday, October 14 or Friday, October 15.
  • Kali Puja and Diwali: Kali Puja on Thursday, October 28. Diwali on Friday, October 29.
  • November and December: Guru Nanak Jayanti and Christmas both fall on Saturdays.

The bad news: the weekend-swallowed holidays of 2027

Before you plan, accept what you are losing. These holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday in 2027, so they give you no extra day off:

  • Netaji Jayanti (Saturday, January 23). It still helps the Republic Day hack below.
  • May Day (Saturday, May 1)
  • Rabindra Jayanti (Saturday)
  • Independence Day (Sunday, August 15)
  • Gandhi Jayanti (Saturday, October 2). It still powers the Puja hack.
  • Vijaya Dashami (Saturday, October 9)
  • Guru Nanak Jayanti (Saturday)
  • Christmas (Saturday, December 25)

That is why 2027 rewards people who plan in January. Most of the good bridges below need only 1 to 3 leaves.

How a leave hack works

A leave hack uses a few days of leave to connect a holiday to a weekend, so short breaks join into one long one. Here is an example. Republic Day falls on Tuesday, January 26, 2027. If you take Monday, January 25 off, you get Saturday through Tuesday as four straight days for one leave.

Three rules make the hacks below work:

  1. Count only weekdays. A leave on a Monday or Friday next to a holiday gives you the most value.
  2. Check your own office list. Kolkata companies differ a lot. State government offices usually get a long Puja block, while many private and IT companies give only Saptami to Dashami, or even fewer days. Adjust each hack to your employer's calendar.
  3. Apply for leave early. In Kolkata offices, Puja and Christmas leave goes to whoever asks first. Put your request in as soon as the new year's calendar is out.

Month by month: every 2027 leave hack, with where to go from Kolkata

January hack 1: the Vivekananda long weekend

  • Dates: Saturday, January 9 to Tuesday, January 12
  • Leave: 1 (Monday, January 11), if your office observes Vivekananda's birthday
  • Days off: 4

Mid-January is peak winter in the hills. It's your best chance at snow without a long trip. For timing, see our guide on when it snows in Himachal Pradesh. With only four days, you can do Darjeeling, Sikkim's Zuluk, or a quick international escape.

January hack 2: the Netaji plus Republic Day bridge

  • Dates: Saturday, January 23 to Tuesday, January 26
  • Leave: 1 (Monday, January 25)
  • Days off: 4

Four days is enough for a short international trip from Kolkata. Thailand is the most popular choice: the weather is dry and pleasant in January, and the flight is short. See our Thailand packages; the Phuket 5D/4N holiday starts from ₹26,300 at the time of writing. If you want ideas for packing the days, read the 6 things you cannot miss on a Thailand trip.

February hack: the Saraswati Puja weekend

  • Dates: Thursday, February 11 to Sunday, February 14
  • Leave: 1 (Friday, February 12)
  • Days off: 4

This one falls on Valentine's weekend, which makes it the best couple's break of the year. Good fits are Puri, Mandarmani, a quick Dubai trip, or Darjeeling in the cold. Families with school children should check the school calendar first, since Saraswati Puja is a big school day in Bengal.

March hack: Dol Jatra plus Good Friday (the best spring hack)

  • Dates: Saturday, March 20 to Sunday, March 28
  • Leave: 3 (Tuesday, March 23 to Thursday, March 25). If your office also gives the Holi holiday on March 23, you need only 2.
  • Days off: 9

This is the strongest hack of the first half of the year. Nine days in late March suits Vietnam perfectly: the dry season runs across much of the country, and you can combine Ho Chi Minh City with Phu Quoc beaches. Start with our Vietnam tour packages from Kolkata; the 7D/6N Ultimate Vietnam Experience starts from ₹24,200 at the time of writing.

Holi week fares can climb, so read our fare guide on the best time to book Kolkata to Vietnam flights before you buy tickets.

Bonus idea: late March is also when cherry blossoms usually start in Japan. Since visa processing takes time, plan this one by January.

April hack: Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year

  • Dates: Saturday, April 10 to Sunday, April 18
  • Leave: 4 (April 12, 13, 15 and 16), with the New Year and Ambedkar Jayanti both on Wednesday, April 14
  • Days off: 9

Short version: take only Thursday and Friday (April 15 to 16) and get 5 days, Wednesday to Sunday, for 2 leaves. If the state list moves Pohela Boishakh to Thursday, April 15, the 9-day version drops to 3 leaves.

April is the last comfortable window for the Northeast before the heavy monsoon. Meghalaya's living root bridges, Dawki's clear river and the Cherrapunji viewpoints are at their best. See our Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata. Shillong is also a short trip from Kolkata, so even the 5-day version works.

May hack: Bakrid plus Buddha Purnima (the summer escape)

  • Dates: Saturday, May 15 to Sunday, May 23
  • Leave: 3 (Tuesday, May 18, Wednesday, May 19 and Friday, May 21)
  • Days off: 9

This is the escape from Kolkata's peak heat. Two directions work well:

  • Go cool: Himachal, Kashmir or Sikkim.
  • Go tropical: Bali enters its dry season around this time. Our post on why winter is the best time to visit Bali explains the logic: Bali's "winter" is the Southern Hemisphere winter, which overlaps the Indian summer.

Eid dates depend on the moon sighting, so keep a one-day buffer when booking.

June hack: Muharram mid-week break

  • Dates: Saturday, June 12 to Wednesday, June 16
  • Leave: 2 (Monday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 15)
  • Days off: 5

Alternatively, take Thursday and Friday after it (June 17 to 18) for Wednesday to Sunday. The monsoon usually reaches Kolkata around mid-June, so head for dry places: Ladakh's season opens up, and Bali is still in its dry months.

August hack: Janmashtami

  • Dates: Wednesday, August 25 to Sunday, August 29
  • Leave: 2 (Thursday, August 26 and Friday, August 27)
  • Days off: 5

Independence Day is lost to a Sunday, so this is August's only real hack. Monsoon Kerala is green, quiet and offers good off-season hotel deals, and it's ideal for Ayurveda breaks. Good short options from Kolkata include Kerala, Goa, or Singapore for a rain-proof city trip.

Durga Puja hack: the big one (2 leaves, 9 days)

  • Dates: Saturday, October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti) to Sunday, October 10
  • Leave: 2 (Monday, October 4 and Tuesday, October 5), assuming your office gives Saptami to Dashami off
  • Days off: 9

For the full set of Puja options, including the 16-day and 30-day versions, see the Durga Puja deep plan below.

Kali Puja plus Diwali hack

  • Dates: Saturday, October 23 to Sunday, October 31
  • Leave: 3 (Monday, October 25 to Wednesday, October 27). Take 4 if your office gives Kali Puja on Thursday, October 28 but not Diwali on Friday, October 29.
  • Days off: 9, with Bhai Phota at the end of the trip

Late October is the start of the cool, dry season across much of Southeast Asia. Our list of the top international destinations to visit in November works just as well for this window. Thailand is the easiest pick from Kolkata: see our Thailand packages.

December hack: Christmas to New Year

  • Dates: Saturday, December 25 to Sunday, January 2, 2028
  • Leave: 5 (Monday, December 27 to Friday, December 31). New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday.
  • Days off: 9

Christmas on a Saturday makes December expensive in leaves. It is still the best weather window for the Maldives, which is in its dry season with calm seas. See our Maldives tour packages from Kolkata. Indian alternatives include Rajasthan's desert camps, Kerala's backwaters or the Andamans.

The 12-leaf master plan for 2027

If you can only spend 12 leaves, use them like this:

  1. January 25: 1 leave gets 4 days off (January 23 to 26)
  2. March 23 to 25: 3 leaves get 9 days off (March 20 to 28)
  3. May 18, 19 and 21: 3 leaves get 9 days off (May 15 to 23)
  4. October 4 and 5: 2 leaves get 9 days off (October 2 to 10)
  5. October 25 to 27: 3 leaves get 9 days off (October 23 to 31)

Total: 12 leaves for 40 days off, which is more than three days off for every day of leave you spend.

If you have 6 more leaves, add the Pohela Boishakh week (4 leaves) and the Janmashtami break (2 leaves). That adds 14 more days, for 18 leaves and 54 days off in total.

Durga Puja 2027: the deep plan

Puja 2027 is early. Durga Ashtami arrives about 12 days earlier than in 2026, so the whole festival lands in the first half of October. Pick one of four plans, depending on how much leave you have.

Plan A: the 9-day classic (2 leaves)

  • Dates: October 2 to October 10
  • Leave: 2 (October 4 and 5)

This is the best ratio of the year: 2 leaves for 9 days. It's perfect for a full international trip. Egypt is a strong choice, since October is when the heat starts to ease and Cairo, Luxor and Aswan become comfortable. See our Egypt tour packages from Kolkata. Meghalaya after the monsoon (waterfalls at full flow, clearer skies) is the best domestic pick.

Plan B: the Bijoya break (pandals first, travel after)

  • Dates: Sunday, October 10 to Sunday, October 17
  • Leave: 4 (October 11, 12, 13 and 15, with Lakshmi Puja on Thursday, October 14)

Many Bengalis don't want to miss Saptami to Dashami at home. This plan lets you do the pandal hopping, the anjali and the Dashami sindoor khela, then leave the day after. A nice side effect is that you avoid the rush of the Panchami and Shashthi departure days, when trains and flights out of Kolkata are at their most crowded.

Plan C: the 16-day Europe window (6 leaves)

  • Dates: Saturday, October 2 to Sunday, October 17
  • Leave: 6 (October 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, plus whichever of October 14 or 15 is not your Lakshmi Puja holiday)

Sixteen days is the only window in the 2027 calendar long enough for a proper multi-country Europe trip without burning most of your annual leave. Europe in early October brings autumn colours, thinner crowds than summer and comfortable temperatures. Our Grand European Discovery (16D/15N) fits this window almost exactly.

Schengen visas can be applied for up to six months before travel. For an October 2 departure, apply in the window from April to July 2027.

Plan D: the 30-day Puja month (14 leaves)

  • Dates: Saturday, October 2 to Sunday, October 31
  • Leave: 14 (October 4, 5, 11 to 13, one of 14 or 15, 18 to 22, and 25 to 27). Add 1 if your office does not give Diwali off.

This covers Durga Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja, Diwali and Bhai Phota in one block. It suits people who work remotely, are between jobs, or are planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Split it into a slow trip: two weeks in Europe or Japan, then Puja at home, then a beach break in Thailand or Bali.

Puja booking warning

Fares from Kolkata rise sharply in the days around Panchami and Shashthi, when the whole city wants to fly out at once. Plan A and Plan C travellers should book international flights 4 to 6 months ahead (by April to June 2027). Domestic trips to Darjeeling, Sikkim and Meghalaya should be booked at least 3 months ahead, since hotels in the hills fill up fast during Puja.

When to book each 2027 window

  • January hacks: book in October to November 2026 (now)
  • Dol Jatra plus Good Friday (March): international bookings by December 2026. Japan visa applications by late January.
  • Pohela Boishakh (April): Meghalaya bookings by January to February
  • Bakrid plus Buddha Purnima (May): book by February. Hill-station hotels sell out early in summer.
  • Durga Puja (October): flights by April to June. Schengen visa applications April to July. Hill hotels by July.
  • Kali Puja plus Diwali (late October): book by June to July
  • Christmas to New Year (December): Maldives and Andaman bookings by August to September, since December is peak season for both

Frequently asked questions

Q: How many leaves do I need for a 9-day Durga Puja holiday in 2027?
A: Two, if your office gives Saptami to Dashami (October 6 to 9) off. Take Monday, October 4 and Tuesday, October 5. Combined with Gandhi Jayanti on Saturday, October 2, you get nine straight days from October 2 to October 10.

Q: What is the best long weekend in 2027 for people in Kolkata?
A: The Dol Jatra plus Good Friday stretch, March 20 to 28, with 3 leaves. Outside Puja, it is the longest break you can build for so few leaves.

Q: Which holidays fall on weekends in 2027 in West Bengal?
A: Netaji Jayanti, May Day, Rabindra Jayanti, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Vijaya Dashami, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Christmas all fall on a Saturday or Sunday in 2027.

Q: Where should I travel during Durga Puja 2027 from Kolkata?
A: It depends on how many days you have:

  • 9 days: Egypt, Vietnam, Dubai or Meghalaya.
  • 16 days: Europe.
  • Pandals first: the Bijoya break (October 10 to 17) works best for Thailand, Sikkim or Darjeeling.

Q: Is the West Bengal 2027 holiday list final?
A: Not yet. The state government usually publishes the next year's list towards the end of the current year. Festival dates follow the lunar calendar, and Eid dates depend on the moon. Always check your own office holiday list too.

Q: Can I get 40 days off in 2027 with 12 leaves?
A: Yes, using the master plan above: 1 leave in January, 3 in March, 3 in May, 2 in early October and 3 in late October. The exact count depends on your employer's holiday calendar.
