Quick answer: The best time to leave for your honeymoon after a Bengali wedding is after Ashtamangala, roughly 8 to 9 days after the Biye. Where you go depends on your wedding month:
- Agrahayan (late November to mid December): Maldives, Thailand's Phuket and Krabi, Dubai, Egypt or the Andamans
- Magh (mid January to mid February): a snow honeymoon in Kashmir or Himachal, or the Maldives at its driest
- Falgun (mid February to mid March): Vietnam, Sri Lanka, or cherry blossom Japan
- Baisakh and Jaistha (mid April to mid June): Sikkim, Kashmir, Bali's dry season or Switzerland
- Asharh and Shraban (mid June to mid August): Bali, Europe, Ladakh or Kenya's Great Migration
Why a Bengali honeymoon needs its own planner
Most honeymoon guides are written for a generic Indian wedding. A Bengali wedding is different in three ways that change your travel dates.
- The Panjika decides the month, not the weather. Bengali weddings cluster in the auspicious months of Agrahayan, Magh, Falgun, Baisakh, Jaistha, Asharh and Shraban. Most families avoid Bhadra, Poush and Chaitra, and very few weddings happen in Ashwin and Kartik. Your honeymoon window is decided the day the Purohit fixes the date.
- The rituals do not end with the Biye. Bashi Biye, Bou Bhaat, Phool Sojja and Ashtamangala follow over the next week. Leaving on Day 2 is not an option for most families.
- Thousands of couples share the same few dates. Popular muhurat dates bring hundreds of weddings in Kolkata on a single night. The following week, hotels in Darjeeling, Puri, Goa and Phuket fill up with Bengali honeymooners. Booking early matters more for Bengali couples than for anyone else.
The Bengali wedding calendar, mapped to English months
The Bengali months map roughly to English months as follows (exact start dates shift by a day or two each year):
- Baisakh: mid April to mid May. Wedding month.
- Jaistha: mid May to mid June. Wedding month (and the month of Jamai Shashthi).
- Asharh: mid June to mid July. Wedding month.
- Shraban: mid July to mid August. Wedding month.
- Bhadra: mid August to mid September. Weddings usually avoided.
- Ashwin: mid September to mid October. Puja month, very few weddings.
- Kartik: mid October to mid November. Very few weddings.
- Agrahayan: mid November to mid December. The biggest wedding month for many families.
- Poush: mid December to mid January. Weddings usually avoided.
- Magh: mid January to mid February. Wedding month, and very popular.
- Falgun: mid February to mid March. Wedding month.
- Chaitra: mid March to mid April. Weddings usually avoided.
Always confirm your exact dates with your family Panjika (Gupta Press or Bisuddha Siddhanta), since the two traditions sometimes list different days.
The 8-day rule: when to actually leave
Here is a typical Bengali wedding week and what it means for your departure:
- Day 1, Biye: the wedding night.
- Day 2, Bashi Biye and Bidaai: the bride leaves for her in-laws' home. Kaalratri follows that night, when the couple traditionally stays apart.
- Day 3, Bou Bhaat and Phool Sojja: the reception and the couple's first night together.
- Day 4 onward: the earliest realistic departure for a honeymoon.
- Around Day 8, Ashtamangala (Dwiragaman): the couple visits the bride's family home together.
There are two ways to plan around this.
- The Day 4 plan: leave the morning after Bou Bhaat. This works when your families are flexible about Ashtamangala, or when they agree to move it. It saves leave, since your wedding leave and honeymoon run back to back.
- The Day 9 plan: finish Ashtamangala, rest for a day, then fly. Elders are happier, you are less exhausted, and you travel without anything pending at home. This is the plan most couples are glad they chose.
Our advice: if your leave allows it, choose the Day 9 plan. A honeymoon you start exhausted from six days of rituals is a honeymoon you spend sleeping.
Agrahayan weddings (mid November to mid December): the sunshine window
Your honeymoon falls in late November or December. This is one of the best honeymoon windows of the year, because the dry season begins across most beach destinations.
Best international picks:
- Maldives: December starts the dry season, with calm seas and clear water for snorkelling. Overwater villas are made for this month. See our Maldives honeymoon and tour packages from Kolkata.
- Thailand (Phuket and Krabi): the Andaman coast enters its high season from November, with flat seas for island hopping to Phi Phi and the Hong islands. See our Thailand packages.
- Egypt: a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan in winter is one of the most romantic trips on earth, and the heat is gone by now. See our Egypt tour packages from Kolkata.
- Dubai: desert dinners, Burj Khalifa at sunset and a short flight from Kolkata.
- Southern Vietnam: Phu Quoc's dry season begins. Avoid central Vietnam (Hoi An and Da Nang), which is still rainy.
Best Indian picks: the Andamans (Havelock's Radhanagar beach at sunset), Kerala's houseboats, Rajasthan's palaces, or Darjeeling and Sikkim for clear Kanchenjunga views.
For more ideas in this window, see our list of the top international destinations to visit in November.
Avoid: Bali in December, since it is the heart of Bali's wet season.
The Agrahayan money trap: if your honeymoon starts after about December 20, you run into Christmas and New Year pricing. Flights and resorts can cost far more in that week. Agrahayan couples who leave before December 20, or wait until after the first week of January, usually save a large share of the budget.
Magh weddings (mid January to mid February): the snow and Valentine's window
Your honeymoon falls in late January or February. This is the coldest window and the best one for a snow honeymoon.
Snow honeymoon picks:
- Kashmir (Gulmarg and Pahalgam): gondola rides and snow-covered meadows.
- Himachal (Manali and Solang): fresh snow and cosy cottages. Check our guide on when it snows in Himachal Pradesh before fixing dates.
- Auli in Uttarakhand: quieter than Manali, with skiing slopes and Himalayan views.
Warm-weather picks: the Maldives (at its driest), Thailand, Sri Lanka's south coast, Kerala and the Andamans.
Two things to watch:
- Valentine's week costs more. Resorts in the Maldives and Goa often raise prices around February 14. A honeymoon in the last week of January can cost much less than one in mid February.
- Vietnam's Tet holiday: Tet (the Vietnamese Lunar New Year) falls in early February in 2027. Many local businesses close and domestic travel inside Vietnam gets crowded. Plan Vietnam either before or after Tet week.
Avoid: Bali (wet season) and Mauritius (cyclone risk in January and February).
Falgun weddings (mid February to mid March): the spring window
Your honeymoon falls in late February or March. This is the most balanced window, with good weather in many places and fewer crowds than December.
Best picks:
- Vietnam: March is one of the best months for the whole country, from Hanoi's mild spring and Ha Long Bay cruises down to Phu Quoc's beaches. See our Vietnam tour packages from Kolkata.
- Japan: cherry blossom season usually starts in late March. If your wedding is in early Falgun, a Day 9 departure can catch the first blooms. Start the visa process the moment your date is fixed.
- Sri Lanka: the south and west coasts (Bentota and Mirissa) are in season, with whale watching near Mirissa.
- Kashmir: Srinagar's tulip garden usually opens around late March to April.
- Meghalaya: spring is a lovely time for Shillong, Dawki's clear river and the root bridges, before the monsoon arrives. See our Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata.
Watch for: Holi week, when domestic flights and hill stations get busy.
Baisakh and Jaistha weddings (mid April to mid June): the escape-the-heat window
Your honeymoon falls between late April and June, when Kolkata is at its hottest. Your goal is cool air or a dry island.
Best picks:
- Sikkim and Darjeeling: rhododendrons bloom in the Sikkim hills in spring. Gangtok, Lachung and Yumthang make a short, affordable honeymoon from Kolkata.
- Kashmir and Himachal: green meadows and pleasant days.
- Bali: Bali's dry season begins around April to May and runs through the Indian summer. Our post on why winter is the best time to visit Bali explains why: Bali's "winter" is the Southern Hemisphere winter, which overlaps our summer. Think rice terraces in Ubud, cliff-top sunsets at Uluwatu and private pool villas.
- Switzerland and Europe: May and June bring spring flowers, long days and lakeside towns before peak summer crowds.
- Mauritius: its cooler, drier season begins around May and June.
The value play: the Maldives enters its wetter southwest monsoon season around May. You get more rain, but resort prices drop. Couples who want an overwater villa on a smaller budget often choose this window and accept a few showers.
Avoid: Thailand, Vietnam and Dubai in April and May, which are very hot.
The Jamai Shashthi reminder: if you marry in Baisakh or early Jaistha, your first Jamai Shashthi falls in Jaistha, often in late May or June. It is an important day for the groom with the bride's family. Check the date and plan your return around it.
Asharh and Shraban weddings (mid June to mid August): the monsoon window
Your honeymoon falls in July or August. Kolkata is in full monsoon, so head where the weather is dry.
Best picks:
- Bali: peak dry season with the best weather of the year. It is also peak price season, so book early.
- Europe: Switzerland, Greece's islands and Italy's coast are in full summer.
- Ladakh: the season is fully open, with Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley at their best.
- Kenya: the Great Migration in the Masai Mara usually runs from about July to October, a once-in-a-lifetime safari honeymoon.
- Mauritius: the cooler, dry winter season.
- Koh Samui in Thailand: the Gulf of Thailand side is often drier in July and August than Phuket's side, which is in its rainy season.
For couples who love the rain: Kerala in the monsoon is green, quiet and ideal for Ayurveda couple therapies. Our post on why Kerala is a must-visit destination for nature lovers shows what you'll see. Hotel prices are lower too.
Avoid: the Maldives and Phuket, which have a higher chance of rough seas and rain in this season.
No wedding in sight? The delayed honeymoon at Puja
Many Bengali couples cannot take leave right after the wedding, so they postpone the honeymoon. The best months for a delayed honeymoon are the ones with no weddings at all:
- Ashwin and Kartik (Durga Puja to Kali Puja): use the Puja holidays to stretch a few leaves into a long trip. In 2027, Durga Puja falls in early October, and a 9-day Puja break needs only 2 leaves for most private sector employees. See our Bengal Leave Hack Calendar 2027 for the exact dates.
- Poush (Christmas and New Year): romantic, but the most expensive window of the year. Book months ahead.
- Chaitra (mid March to mid April): quiet and good value. Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Meghalaya are all lovely.
The honeymoon checklist for Bengali newlyweds
Documents:
- Passport name: the bride does not need to change her surname before travelling. Book every ticket and hotel in the exact name printed on the passport. A mismatch is the most common honeymoon booking mistake.
- Marriage registration: register your marriage early. A marriage certificate helps with joint visa applications for destinations like Europe. Many resorts also ask for proof of your wedding date to give honeymoon perks such as a cake, a decorated room or an upgrade. A copy of your wedding card often works as well.
- Passport validity: most countries need at least six months of validity left on your passport. Check both passports the day you fix the wedding date, since renewals take time in wedding season.
Jewellery:
- Leave heavy wedding gold at home. Shakha, pola and noa are fine to wear.
- If you must carry expensive jewellery abroad, ask customs at the departure airport for an export certificate before you fly, so you have no trouble bringing it back.
Health and comfort:
- Plan one rest day before flying. Six days of rituals, late nights and heavy food catch up with everyone.
- Pack light, breathable clothes for beach honeymoons. For snow trips, rent heavy jackets and boots at the destination instead of carrying them.
- For packing, read our comparison of hard shell vs soft shell luggage. It helps you pick the right bag for each type of trip.
When to book your honeymoon
The most important step is booking as soon as your wedding date is fixed, ideally right after Paka Dekha (the formal fixing of the wedding).
- International honeymoons: book 3 to 4 months before the wedding. For peak windows (Agrahayan's December, Magh's Valentine's week, Bali in July and August), book 5 to 6 months ahead.
- Visas: start the moment your date is fixed for Europe, Japan and other visa-required destinations. Your marriage certificate may not be ready in time, so ask your travel planner which documents work for your case.
- Indian honeymoons: book 2 to 3 months ahead. Hill stations and beach towns fill up quickly in the week after popular muhurat dates.
Frequently asked questions
Q: How many days after a Bengali wedding should we leave for the honeymoon?

Q: What is the best honeymoon destination from Kolkata for a December (Agrahayan) wedding?
A: The Maldives, Thailand's Phuket and Krabi, Egypt and Dubai are the top international choices. In India, the Andamans, Kerala and Rajasthan are excellent. Try to travel before about December 20 to avoid Christmas and New Year pricing.
Q: Where should we go for a honeymoon after a Magh wedding?
A: For snow, choose Kashmir, Manali or Auli. For a beach, the Maldives is at its driest in late January and February. Avoid Bali, which is in its wet season.
Q: Which Bengali months have no weddings?
A: Most families avoid Bhadra, Poush and Chaitra, and very few weddings take place in Ashwin and Kartik. These months are ideal for a delayed honeymoon.
Q: Is the Maldives good for a honeymoon in May or June?
A: It is the wetter monsoon season, so expect some rain and rougher seas. Prices are usually lower, which makes it a value choice for couples who don't mind a few showers.
Q: Does the bride need to change her passport name before the honeymoon?
A: No. She can travel on her current passport. Book all tickets and hotels in the exact name on the passport.
Q: What is the cheapest honeymoon window for Bengali couples?
A: Late January (before Valentine's week), March, and the Maldives or Kerala during the monsoon tend to offer the best value. The most expensive windows are Christmas to New Year, Valentine's week and Bali in July and August.
